More Than Math!

The Fourth Grade MathBee Invitational was developed by Go Full STEAM in cooperation with Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) to create excitement for mathematics and encourage students to consider careers in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) related fields as well as see the importance of Mathematics in their personal lives and future careers. Trophies, t-shirts, medals and cash prizes are used to motivate students to master the fourth grade math curriculum in preparation for the MathBee. Students also learn confidence, poise and grace under pressure.

The Factors

In 2011, John Pedicone started tutoring math at an OCPS Title I* elementary school. While tutoring, John sensed that more could be done to motivate students.

After considering multiple ideas John decided that a math bee might just do the trick. It was determined that fourth grade was the optimal grade for student participants because fourth grade math skills are critical to future success in math. John then secured the necessary permissions, researched existing math bees, developed rules, obtained funding, and recruited volunteers. Fourth grade teachers helped John create math bee questions. After lots of hard work it was finally time for the math bee. Over one-hundred fourth graders participated in the first Fourth Grade MathBee Invitational. Within five years the MathBee had expanded from one to twenty-five schools, and from 100 student participants to 2,225. Approximately 20,000 fourth graders have participated in the MathBee over the past 14 years.

The Fourth Grade MathBee Invitational is held in three stages. The first round includes all fourth grade students at participating schools. The top four students from each classroom then participate in the school final. Each school champion goes on to compete in the school district final. The district final is a math-magical event filled with excitement. Over four hundred students watch in anticipation as their peers compete on the stage. The atmosphere is tense as students answer questions and solve math problems until one student is finally declared the winner. The top three winners each receive a large trophy and impressive award check - $1000 for first, $500 for second and $250 for third.

The Sum

Since its inception the focus of the Fourth Grade MathBee Invitational has been to reach disadvantaged students in Title I* schools, increase their interest in math and provide incentives to study math facts and improve math skills. It seems to be working! During one MathBee, four students were left, and all the planned questions had been asked. Additional questions had to be developed on the spot as students patiently waited. In 2024 it took over three hours to determine the Fourth Grade MathBee Invitational champion. Past competitions were completed in less than two hours. Future questions are being updated to keep pace with students’ increasing math skills.

*Title I schools have a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students.

Having seen the powerful effect that a MathBee can have on a school, the OCPS District School Transformation and Community Resources Offices are supporting the expansion of this program and event. We have confidence that the Fourth Grade MathBee Invitational will spur our students to increased confidence, interest in, and success with, mathematics in the classroom, school, and in life.

Thank you for supporting our classroom when many students were struggling with math. I also want to thank you for inspiring me to become a computer engineer… I hope I can be just like you one day.

John Pedicone

MathBee Program Director

John’s love of science and math was driven by watching rocket launches during the space race, plenty of Star Trek and other science fiction. John had a microscope, chemistry set and all sorts of model building and electrical projects. But most of all, John loved math and dreamed of competing in a math bee.  He was frustrated that there was a national spelling bee but no national math bee. Many years later John had the opportunity to fulfill his childhood dream by creating his very own MathBee! MathBee strives to create excitement for math among all students while enhancing their math skills and self-confidence. MathBee also provides talented students the opportunity to gain important recognition for their accomplishments. And that all makes John very happy!
